‘It doesn’t feel equitable:’ National school bussing issue leads to parents missing work and some children missing school in EWSD

“If you know anyone who wants to learn to drive a school bus, call Mountain Transit at 893-1334.’” 

That's the very last thing families hear after EWSD lists the string of all the routes that are canceled, EWSD transportation director Jamie Smith told the Reporter. The nationwide decline of school bus drivers is a complicated problem that affects the 630 EWSD students who take the bus, working parents, families with only one car and the bus drivers.

‘A force of nature:’ The history of the spongy moth invasion and how Vermonters can fight it

The story of the spongy moths in the United States began with a mistake in 1869.

French scientist Dr. Leopold Trouvelot was trying to use the spongy moths for textile production in Medford, MA when they escaped from his lab, state entomologist Judy Rosovsky Rosovsky said. In the 154 years since, the spongy moths have invaded the ecosystems of 19 different states, according to the U.S Department of Agriculture. They first entered Vermont in the 1920s.

EWSD recommends an FY24 budget of $90.7 million. No, that is not all coming out of your property taxes.

“Our budget this year is what the school needs, without extras,” EWSD Superintendent Beth Cobb said at a Feb. 2 board meeting.

The district knows the Town of Essex is facing a significant tax rate increase due to separation with the City of Essex Junction, and took that into account when putting together the recommended budget. By “scrubbing” the budget and applying for grants, the district worked to ensure it wouldn’t also recommend a large increase.
